The Residency Diversity Committee was initially motivated by the need of Internal Medicine Residency Programs to serve the multiethnic population of California. It was established in October 1993 and called the Committee for Recruitment of Minority Residents. Minority recruitment was already a priority and this was an attempt to formalize the process across the four U.C.S.F. hospitals. Eliseo J. Perez-Stable, M.D., Professor of Medicine (now Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine) was asked to Chair the Committee. Support from the Chairman of the Department of Medicine and participation by the residency program directors, faculty and administrators was essential to the survival and success of this committee. In 2005 the name was changed to the Residency Diversity Committee. Although minority outreach efforts are still an essential part of this committee, members wanted to broaden the issues they advocate for so that general diversity issues can be addressed.
